The Vrije Universiteit’s main building was commissioned in 1970, after the then main building at Keizersgracht 162 proved too small. The first pile was driven on 12 June 1966. In 1970, while the building was still under construction, the first 12 floors were already occupied due to the growing number of students. From that year, four faculties (Theology, Law, Literature, Economics) moved into the building. On 12 April 1973, the building was officially opened in the presence of Queen Juliana. At the time of completion, the Main Building was the largest building in Amsterdam in terms of floor space, with 90,000 square meters. The building is an example of Brutalism, with an exuberant use of concrete and little finishing on the inside and outside of the supporting structure

Keyring VU griffin

The VU logo is characteristic of the identity of VU Amsterdam. It depicts the griffin, a mythical creature with the good qualities of a lion, an eagle and a horse. The different animals reference the different fields of science, which is stylistically expressed in a ‘classically’ designed body (the arts), ‘mathematically’ designed head (STEM) and ‘freely’ drawn wings (humanities). The griffin is looking back—it is aware of tradition. By virtue of its experience, it has both feet on the ground. It combines this with a big leap of the imagination.
