The Vrije Universiteit’s main building was commissioned in 1970, after the then main building at Keizersgracht 162 proved too small. The first pile was driven on 12 June 1966. In 1970, while the building was still under construction, the first 12 floors were already occupied due to the growing number of students. From that year, four faculties (Theology, Law, Literature, Economics) moved into the building. On 12 April 1973, the building was officially opened in the presence of Queen Juliana. At the time of completion, the Main Building was the largest building in Amsterdam in terms of floor space, with 90,000 square meters. The building is an example of Brutalism, with an exuberant use of concrete and little finishing on the inside and outside of the supporting structure

Ever since its foundation in 1880, the Vrije Universiteit has been at the heart of society. This is partly a result of the special way it came about: thanks to private initiative and financed with start-up capital from an entrepreneur who thinks along with you. Dependence on donations was a constant in the first three-quarters of a century of the VU, symbolized by the famous green collection box bearing the image of Abraham Kuyper. The sympathetic supporters liked to remind the university of its social duties. This resulted in an open mind towards society, but occasionally led to frictions between the university and its critical back guard. In a sense, the illustrious early days have always been palpable. The Christian heritage has today been translated into a choice for ‘responsibility’ as one of the core values of research and education. On the basis of 26 biographical portraits of VU prominent people, further viewing shows how the multicolored relationship between university and society has taken shape over the past 135 years.

The most famous Dutchman died a century ago. That is to say, the only one besides Queen Wilhelmina to make the front page of The New York Times. Abraham Kuyper was a child prodigy with ‘ten heads and a hundred arms’, chosen in 1906 as the most popular man next to the strongest woman, the young queen. This portrait opens up surprising perspectives on seven of his colorful lives. First the adventurer: alpinist, world traveler. Then his better known roles: celebrated speaker, scientist, activist, journalist and statesman. Each chapter is based on new sources, each with biographical revelations. Together they provide a kaleidoscopic picture of a man whose versatility was surpassed only by his incredible productivity. He wrote more than two hundred books, tens of thousands of articles, traveled halfway around the world and was an avid mountain climber. He had more admirers than opponents, but his sworn enemies formed almost the entire Dutch elite, including the young queen. At the same time, he was the only one who was internationally acclaimed as a statesman and dined with kings and emperors. He was certain of one thing: the biggest divisive issue Dutch history has produced. He has always been controversial. As a historian, Johan Snel got involved in journalism, about which he teaches and writes. Ten journalistic ideals (2016) and Recht van Speak were previously published. Belief in freedom of expression (2011).

The Free University started in 1880 with five professors and the same number of students. She cut a strange figure next to the public universities. The establishment of this dwarf school seemed doomed to failure from the outset. Yet the founder Abraham Kuyper was sure of his case. He had provided his people with a party, a newspaper and a church. In that series, the university formed an indispensable element, in order to lay the foundations under the Reformed pillar and to provide it with a framework in all areas of life.
