The Free University started in 1880 with five professors and the same number of students. She cut a strange figure next to the public universities. The establishment of this dwarf school seemed doomed to failure from the outset. Yet the founder Abraham Kuyper was sure of his case. He had provided his people with a party, a newspaper and a church. In that series, the university formed an indispensable element, in order to lay the foundations under the Reformed pillar and to provide it with a framework in all areas of life.
