The VU Boekhandel is a campus bookstore located in the hall of the main building of the Vrije Universiteit. In addition to study books, non-fiction, literature, novels, office supplies and gifts, we have a wide range of products with the Vrije Universiteit logo. The VU logo is characteristic of the identity of VU Amsterdam. It depicts the griffin, a mythical creature with the good qualities of a lion, an eagle and a horse. The different animals reference the different fields of science, which is stylistically expressed in a ‘classically’ designed body (the arts), ‘mathematically’ designed head (STEM) and ‘freely’ drawn wings (humanities). The griffin is looking back—it is aware of tradition. By virtue of its experience, it has both feet on the ground. It combines this with a big leap of the imagination.
